Replace cell providers SMSC?

I saw a link to a playSMS tutorial on lxer.com, but I’m don’t quite understand the purpose of the project. As an individual, is this something I could use to bypass my cell provider’s SMS service center and gateway (i.e change the SMSC on my phone)? Could I use it in a fashion similar to Google Voice (without the calling part, of course)?

Is there a similar project for MMS?

Hi,

Generally the answer is No to all your questions.

playSMS is a web interface to send and read SMS from gateway. The gateway can be a software that can actually send/receive SMS from mobile device, or services on the internet that served sending/receiving SMS.

For example:

You --> playSMS --> Kannel --> GSM modems with SIM cards --> GSM network

Or:

You --> playSMS --> Nexmo or Twilio --> GSM network
